Survey Sunday Roundup: Fannish Skills At Work

So we talked Fannish Skills.  What did we have to say?

1. So we gain a lot of skills from our fandoms and hobbies. What are ones that you, personally, use on the job to one extent or another?

  • 90% – Computer knowledge
  • 70% – Culture/Pop culture knowledge
  • 60% – Writing/Fanfic/Review/Ranting
  • 60% – Technical knowledge (setting up servers, hosting, etc.)
  • 50% – Obscure stuff most people would never know
  • 50% – Internet skills (setting up web pages, message boards, etc)
  • 40% – Market/Business knowledge of geeky business
  • 40% – Publishing (web, electronic, or physical)
  • 30% – Art/Design/Graphics
  • 30% – Creation/Making something
  • 20% – Leadership/management of groups
  • 10% – Video editing/creation

I realized a few of these were highly specialized (art, video), but still pretty interesting – especially that obscure stuff was rated so high.  Maybe this is something to explore . . .

Also, someone had one additional skill "Explaining/translating technical jargon to understandable language" which makes sense.

Next up . . .

2. Which geek/fannish skills do you think "non-fans" and "non-geeks" value and understand the most?

  • Technical knowledge (setting up servers, hosting, etc.) – Highly valued
  • Internet skills (setting up web pages, message boards, etc) – Highly valued
  • Culture/Pop culture knowledge – Valued
  • Art/Design/Graphics – Valued
  • Publishing (web, electronic, or physical) – Valued
  • Video editing/creation – Valued
  • Leadership/management of groups – Valued (but trending lower)
  • Creation/Making something – "As Valued as Anything Else" but trending high
  • Market/Business knowledge of geeky business- "As Valued as Anything Else" but trending high
  • Writing/Fanfic/Review/Ranting – Some Value (we were rather split on this)
  • Obscure stuff most people would never know – Some Value (yet, note above, we get a lot of use out of it)

There you go – so what do you think?
