Make It So: Code At Cons

Coding is vitally important in our high-tech world. It’s not just a skill you use in a career, but something that is vital for empowering people. Being able to do a web page on your own, making a helpful macro, understanding a script is the key to using modern tools and understanding how the world works. I’m guessing you’ve coded at least a little bit if you’re reading it -just think what you wouldn’t know without it.

Imagine every time you have to explain something technical to someone with no experience.  Imagine how disempowered they are.

This is why I’m glad to see organizations and events promoting coding, such as:

So I got thinking. Coding is important. We’re geeks and we probably know it or should know it. We’d like to empower our fellow geeks – and ourselves.

There’s something we can do, and I want to suggest we Make It So.

We need to hold Learn To Code Events at conventions.

Penny4NASA

I’m a big booster of space exploration and science exploration in general.  Of course it seems NASA gets ignored a lot – they get 0.48% of the US government budget.  Think about that.

Fortunately, Penny4NASA is there to promote citizen involvement.  They’d be happy with 1% and I say go for it.

Their site provides resources to get active, information on what NASA does for us, and more.

The Story Of Yo

Business Insider investigates the app “Yo” and what it means.

I won’t lie – I think “Yo” sounds incredibly stupid.  I don’t get it beyond a flash-in-the-pan.  But Business Insider does what has to be done and examines it.

It started as a joke, got rejected initially, and everyone thought it was dumb, yet it was timely.

It makes me think really Yo is kind of an exception to the rules.  A one-off.  My concern is how many people won’t get that . . . and we’ll be flooded with dumb apps trying to jump on it.
