Cory Doctorow Wants Writers To Stand Up For Libraries

He’s got some good points.

This is important to many of us who are small press and independent writers.  We should be involved in libraries, literacy, and other causes that focus on reading and writing.  We may not be as famous as Doctorow (yet), but there are a lot of us and we love doing this.

Economics: Less Teens Getting Licenses

Don’t have time, cars are expensive, and there are options.

This doesn’t shock me in the least because between the cost of gas, the cost of cars, and the options (if you’re in the right area), the need for a car is probably lower.  Again, that’s probably the area one lives in, which makes me curious about demographic distribution here.

Now what’s got me curious is if this decrease (and the decrease of car sales has an interesting spread into older demographics), is going to fuel more interest in public transport at least in America.  That’s a bit tough with slashed budgets and your usual government dysfunction.

I also wonder how many teens don’t need licenses as they don’t have jobs in this economy.

Actually, I Suspect ‘Lone Ranger’ Just Kind of Sucks

Between Bruckheimer’s complaints and Depp and Hammer blaming critics, it appears a lot of people are not taking the failure of “Lone Ranger” very well.  This is a reaction I’m not used to seeing since it sounds like it’ll only exacerbate the issue of the film just not doing well.

For those of us who follow the cultural and career issues of the Hollywood meltdown that we’re kind of expecting, I wonder if we’ll see more of this.
