Further Elder Geek Thoughts: Maturity

Last column I explored how conventions were a place where the silly and the serious, the fun and the professional, combined. It was where you could cut loose – and then the inspiration could be channeled. It was where panels fanning over Sleepy Hollow* are then followed by workshops on writing. Conventions are a liminal space.

Serdar, my multitalented friend, noted in response that for many people, when they become a so-called adult, they often limit what they consider the fun they can have. Conventions are spaces where we can actually just like what we like, and are thus valued. Well, like what we like with the occasional stupid argument, but still.

That got me thinking about media and what is considered “age-appropriate materials” – and how such ideas are actually rather irrelevant, misguided, and confusing.

Because when we talk about what media is mature or not, suitable for adults or kids, it’s often meaningless. It’s assumptions without substance.

Assuming we have a grasp on what is “truly mature media” really is a bit immature . . .

New Book Project – Sailor Moon Book!

Sailor Moon, the anime, the manga, the fandom is everywhere.  It’s been with us for decades.  It’s influenced many people.  In North America she’s probably one of the most recognizable super-heroines.  There’s a lot to learn from the fandom – and you know how I like to learn!

I’m teaming up with a fellow professional, Bonnie Walling, to work on a book about the impact of Sailor Moon on women 18 and older in North America. We’re looking to interview women who were or are fans of Sailor Moon, and who felt it had a positive impact on their lives.  Our goal is to listen to people’s voices, and organize what we find into a book that will help people understand how the phenomena affected – and affects – these fans In addition, we’re doing historical and related research so the book can try and give people a grasp of the impact of the series over time, and provide a useful reference.

We’re looking for people to interview, so if you’d like to be interviewed or know people who would be, go on and let me know!

If you’re interviewed, then:

  • That you’re credited in the book – by your given name, nickname, alias, or whatever you prefer.
  • That you’ll get to see a draft of the book (electronically) before it goes out.
  • You’ll get a free e-copy of the book after publication in your preferred format (PDF, ePub, Kindle, etc.)

Drop us a line!

Steve’s Update 6/5/2015

Hello everyone!  Had a busy week so this is a tad late.

First of all, if you’re on my personal newsletter, you just got it.  Need to make sure those are more regular.

Way with Worlds has officially wrapped up.  I’ve started work on the Way With Worlds book, and after a review . . . man that’s a lot of material.  However, I can also see how my approach varied over time, so I want to make sure it’s consistent, expand it a bit, and so on.  Current plans are to have it out in 2016.

I need to get to the Plot Twist Generator for the Sanctum – and am still not quite sure how to start it, and probably won’t get to it until July  I think it’s going to be like the Writing Prompt Generator – I’m just gonna have to dive into research, classic plot twists, and so on and go from there.  The Writing Prompt generator was pretty educational, so I have to wonder what this’ll teach me.

Still waiting to hear back from several conventions on my potential speaking schedule – and I’m also trying to push the idea of cons running creative jams.  Imagine a room set aside for just for writing or art – maybe for the entire con?  Well I got a new thing to promote.

Now the upcoming big news – I am going to do the official announcement soon, but I and a partner are starting a book on anime fandom.  More to come, but we will need interviewees . . .

Respectfully,
