Gear Up For Some Space Opera

My friend Serdar has been working on his latest book, Flight of the Vajra, for awhile.  I recently helped him edit it, and he’s released Chapter Zero to whet your appetite.

Go read it.  Because, trust me, this book is good.

I edited it, and after awhile, I didn’t really feel like I was doing work.  It’s a compelling novel of what I like to call “Hard Space Opera,” a space opera tale that has a lot of serious, thought-provoking elements and a wild cast.  From a genius spacecraft engineer with a cache of illegal technology, to spiritual leader with a very complex burden, to a gender-shifting singer, you’ll meet a lot of complicated characters.  You don’t even know everyone’s plans or motivations until the last few pages of the book, and you don’t know everyone’s fate much the same way.

It also covers a lot of interesting issues of technology, transhumanism, space travel, life, and death.  I was constantly intrigued, surprised, and asking questions.

So go and check it out – then wait for the book.  Trust me, it’s worth it.

More Amazon Licensed Fanfic Coming

Well it looks like Amazon started something (which Amazon is in the habit of doing), and more license-holders have signed on to their licensed fanfic plan.

Specifically they added Valiant Entertainment, which does not surprise me as Valiant has a fascinating history of ups, downs, morphing, and experiments.

What also is intriguing is this is fiction on comic properties – will Amazon be open to fancomics at some point?

How interesting is this?  Well, I tagged my calendar to help us track what’s up here.  In the areas of licensing, publishing, writing careers, and more this is going to get pretty interesting.

The Fabulist Needs Your Help!

From Josh at The Fabulist:

The-Fabulist.org is looking for volunteer slush readers … If you’d like to get involved, please email The Fabulist at readme@the-fabulist.org, and include a short note detailing your interest, experience and expectations for doing any slush reading.

Background: The Fabulist’s website relaunch has gone well. Traffic is up and we’re starting to get a goodly queue of submissions to review, of fiction and poetry. In fact, the number of submissions is starting to exceed my ability to manage them in a timely manner.

As I mentioned, we need volunteers only … The Fab is entirely volunteer run, and while we imagine a future where we pay people, writers as well as staff, that future is not yet upon us. We’ve never worked with slush readers before, so in addition to anything else, I welcome any advice on setting up slush workflow, expectations, etc.

Help him out!
